Port City FC Joins USL W League for the 2026 Season

Wilmington, NC & Tampa, Fla. – The United Soccer League (USL) announced today that Port City FC will join the USL W League for the 2026 season, marking an exciting new chapter for the Wilmington-based club.

Founded in 2022 as a men’s pre-professional team, Port City FC expanded to launch a women’s team in 2024. The club is driven by a mission to use soccer as a force for good—uplifting the Wilmington community through inclusive, competitive, and character-building opportunities for players of all ages and backgrounds.

“We are excited to continue building a platform where women’s soccer thrives, where dreams take flight, and where our community comes together through soccer,” said Steven Wagoner, Chairman of Port City FC. “We want to create opportunities, inspire future generations, and leave a legacy both on and off the field.”

Port City FC emphasizes excellence, integrity, and sportsmanship, fostering an environment where athletes can compete at the highest levels while developing personally and professionally. The club’s local commitment is evident through strong grassroots connections and partnerships with youth organizations like PISA, WUFA, and the YMCA, along with regular collaborations with area non-profits—including donating a portion of ticket sales to local causes.

“We’re thrilled to join the USL W League and help build a national platform that empowers women through soccer,” said Joey Lipoff, Port City FC President. “Port City FC is committed to developing local talent and driving positive change through sport, and this opportunity aligns perfectly with our mission.”

The team will compete in the Eastern Conference and play its home matches at Legion Stadium in Wilmington, NC. Head Coach Chad Medcalfe, who brings over 30 years of experience and has led the women’s team since its founding, will continue at the helm.

“Port City’s expansion into the USL W League is a reflection of their commitment to inclusivity, opportunity, and local impact,” said Joel Nash, USL SVP of Youth and Pre-Professional Properties. “Wilmington has a strong, passionate soccer culture, and we’re excited to see Port City FC provide a new platform for women to develop and compete at a high level.”

As a community-funded and community-backed organization, Port City FC plays an active role in regional development, participating in the Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Business Alliance to foster civic engagement.

The club’s partners include MLDA, Wrightsville Brewery, Floriana, Patriot Roofing, Rounds Golf, Ledo’s Pizza, Change the Game PT, Wilmington Health, Avance Care, and Laws and Libations.
